How Wheel Offset Works

Offset (stamped on the wheel as ET, e.g. ET35) is the distance in millimeters from the wheel's hub mounting face to its centerline. The mounting face is fixed to your hub - so offset and width together determine where both edges of the wheel end up.

Outer edge position = (Width in mm Ć· 2) āˆ’ Offset
Inner edge position = (Width in mm Ć· 2) + Offset

Width in millimeters is the advertised width Ɨ 25.4. Note that advertised width is measured bead-seat to bead-seat - the actual outer lip adds roughly half an inch per side, the same on both wheels, so it cancels out in a comparison.

The Tire Matters Too

Spacers

A spacer is functionally an offset reduction: a 12 mm spacer turns an ET35 wheel into an ET23. Use the calculator by subtracting the spacer thickness from your current offset. Hub-centric spacers preserve the wheel's centering ring fit; always re-check stud or bolt thread engagement after spacing.

Positive, Negative, and Zero Offset

Offset describes where the mounting face sits relative to the wheel's centerline. Positive offset (most modern cars, especially front-drive) puts the face toward the street side of the centerline, tucking the wheel under the fender. Negative offset puts the face inboard of the centerline, pushing the barrel outward for the deep-dish, poked look popular on stance and motorsport builds. Zero offset sits the face exactly on the centerline. Two wheels can share the same offset but sit differently if their widths differ, which is why offset and width must always be read together.

Worked Example

Compare a stock 8.5J ET35 wheel with an aftermarket 9.5J ET22. Convert widths to millimeters (1 inch = 25.4 mm) and find each wheel's outer edge position relative to the hub face:

Stock outer = (8.5 Ɨ 25.4 Ć· 2) āˆ’ 35 = 107.95 āˆ’ 35 = 72.95 mm
New outer = (9.5 Ɨ 25.4 Ć· 2) āˆ’ 22 = 120.65 āˆ’ 22 = 98.65 mm

The new wheel's outer face sits about 25.7 mm further toward the fender - that's just over an inch of added poke per side, which is a lot and almost certainly needs fender clearance checked at full compression and steering lock. On the inner edge:

Stock inner = 107.95 + 35 = 142.95 mm New inner = 120.65 + 22 = 142.65 mm

The inner edge barely moves (0.3 mm), so suspension clearance is essentially unchanged - the extra inch of width and the 13 mm offset drop both pushed the added rubber outward. That is exactly the "all the width on the outside" recipe: go one inch wider while dropping offset about 13 mm and the inner edge stays put.

What clearance problems does too much poke cause?

Reducing offset moves the wheel and tire toward the fender. Too much poke can rub the fender lip at full suspension compression or at steering lock, fail fender-coverage laws in some regions, and increase load on wheel bearings. Going the other way - too much inner clearance change - risks the tire or wheel contacting the strut, coilover spring, or control arm.
